Golf Nation is also home to the Loyola University Golf Team.
How many of you were cheering for Greg Norman to win The British Open, or should we call it as they do overseas The Open Championship? Just like many of us were hoping that Rocco Mediate would beat Tiger Woods in this year’s U.S. Open, Norman was quite a story in the year’s third major. With Tiger out of the tournament I think this major needed a big story to develop and Greg Norman’s play provided that angle. In the end it was Padraig Harrington out dueling Norman and a few others who made a run on the final day.
Now let’s hope that Greg Norman can delay his honeymoon with new wife Chris Evert a little longer and play in more professional events. Even though he showed he can still play with the flat bellies, The Champions Tour would surely get a much needed boost if Norman played on that 50 and over circuit.
As for the Open champion, Padraig Harrington, congrats to our friends at Wilson Golf which is based here in the Chicago area. Wilson Staff equipment dominated Harrington’s bag en route to victory at Royal Birkdale including his driver, 5-wood, irons, and wedges. That 5-wood he hit in the final round on the par 5 17th hole was a Wilson Fybrid 5-wood which he hit to within 5 feet. He then converted the eagle putt to stretch his lead to four shots and secure the victory, his second British Open championship in a row.
Wilson Golf is a big supporter of The Golf Scene and that victory marked the 60th major championship title won with Wilson irons. Amazing!
